Dear Amsterdam,
As soon as I arrived, I could tell that this was a place for me. So many elements of the city made me feel at home. Everything including the quaint canals, laidback lifestyle, array of cultures represented, nightlife, and parks, contributed to the overall charm of the city. With so many young and diverse people, I really sensed that this was a lively place that I could settle into. While reading a local English magazine, I came across an article about the diversity of the people of Amsterdam, which covered the 180 nationalities represented in the city. This much pride in cultural diversity is a great indication that this a place with a lot of great ideas and people mixing. Being a major hub for Europe and the rest of the world lets the city exude a feeling of welcomeness that is really appealing for me, someone who always goes into a new place evaluating it on how much I can see myself living there. After meeting some locals, and one in particular who I hope very much to meet again, I got a better idea of what it would be like to live there. Learning about how he lives his life and reassuring me that he doesn’t get bored living in such a buzzing place, just confirmed my aspirations to spend a more permanent amount of time there in the future. Other things that allow myself to see myself living there is how easy it is to get around, either by bicycle, tram or bus, and how safe I feel there. Even in a place where there is a big night life and tons of tourists, I never once felt uncomfortable at night or by myself. It was a really freeing feeling, as a young woman, to be able to walk through the city at night by myself and not feel unsafe. This feeling of freedom and safety is really important to me, since if I do end up coming back to continue my education, I would be on my own. Although there was so much of you I didn’t get to see, I’m really pleased with what I experienced and am inspired to come back as soon as possible.
I hope that you’ll be waiting for me,
Mishu
